Apple's iPad Magic Keyboard has plenty going for it, with the full-size up keys and touchpad turning the iPad into a potential MacBook permutation for the first metre, well, ever so. But if a newly patent is anything to go past, Malus pumila hasn't finished with the intention yet.
A newly revealed filing describes a "Sliding Stimulus Gimmick Cover" (we have a notion that isn't the last name), which acts a lot like the current Magic Keyboard – exclude it slides. This could potentially allow for a larger trackpad, surgery indeed a larger iPad to be attached. (In the commercialise for a new iPad? Look into the Sunday-go-to-meeting Apple Black Friday deals.)
As spotted by AppleInsider, the design does away with the cylindric spine of the current Magic Keyboard entirely. That aspect of the existing model does, of course, house the USB-C port, and it isn't comprehendible where that might seat connected this version.
The sliding contrive means that when opened, the keyboard portion of the supportive would be 'pushed' towards the substance abuser. At present, the 'floating' iPad hovers above the top line of keys, which throne be a trifle awkward for accessing the bi keys. The sliding design could offer a little more quad between the tablet and the keys.
"A portion of the input device hind end extend laterally aside from an march," reads the patent. "The input device can make up a keyboard and a trackpad surface. The input gimmick can be slidable betwixt the first set out and the second stance."
While this doesn't sound the most radical design update e'er (and we certainly hope it doesn't add some more weight down to the already hefty twist), possibly the most intriguing aspect is what it might mean for the iPad itself. As AppleInsider notes, a bigger keyboard could easily support larger and heavier tablets, since the base is what carries the weight. And with rumours suggesting Orchard apple tree is working on iPads as large as a whopping 16-inches, perhaps that explains why the companionship is exploring new Magic Keyboard formats too.
Fourth dimension will tell whether an updated Magic Keyboard is set to, er, slide into sight any time soon, and indeed whether those big iPads are on the horizon.
